St. Marys, Cumberland Island & SavannahFriday - Tuesday, April 2 - 6, 2004

The coast of Georgia is especially appealing this time of year. Join us for a leisurely walking tour including Cumberland Island National Seashore, largest and southernmost of Georgia’s barrier islands, and historical Savannah. After days of absorbing natural, historical and cultural sights, stay in lodgings with history of their own.

ITINERARY

Friday, we greet you at the Spencer House Inn in St. Marys, Georgia for orientation and a walk before dinner. Built in 1872, exquisitely pre-served, the inn is on the National Register of Historic Places. We spend our first two nights here.

St Marys is the gateway to Cumberland Island. A 45-minute ferry ride takes us to the island, a great way to observe the coast of Georgia up close. View ruins of Thomas Carnegie’s Dungeness plantation, take island trails to explore the maritime forest, salt water marshes and beach. The island is home to wild horses, loggerhead sea turtles, armadillos, and a variety of shore-birds.

Savannah - A two-hour ride up the coast takes us to Savannah, one of the country’s best walking cities, according to Walking Magazine. The Foley House, an elegant, restored inn, located in the heart of Savannah’s Historic district is home for the next two nights.

Explore the Savannah Historic District, including gardens, graveyards, ruins–with local guides–and get a fine appreciation of its history and great stories. At twilight, walk with the “Low Country Ghosts” because a town with this much history definitely has a few skeletons in her closet.

Savannah, with a river running through it, offers delightful places to walk, explore and “yes”, even shop.

Fee includes guided hiking, admissions, lodging, breakfasts, one trail lunch, two dinners and local transportation. Tour fee: $1495 (all rooms single; 2 people sharing discounted). Tour deposit: $500. Reservation deadline: February 21, at which time the full fee is due.

Transportation available from Jacksonville, Florida airport returning to Savannah airport.
